When we talk of the traditional system of India education the milestone to boast are The Vedas, Puranas, Ayurveda, Yoga, Kautilya Arthasahtra and the formal Gurukul system which was meant to impart education in a most disciplined way.
The current education system is an implementation of the British rulers. 1854 Wood office laid the foundations of the current system of education in India. And since then education system has undergone many changes all in term of standard, quality and even the purpose has changed. Now the education system is often cited as one of the main contributors to the economic rise of India.
There was a time when girl’s education was equally discounted but now the elementary education has become the fundamental right of every child aged 6-10, a great thanks to the 86th constitutional amendment. There have been crucial steps taken to improve access to higher education among women
Today Education in India is under the control of both the Government of the Union and States, with some responsibilities lie with the Union and States have the autonomy to others.
Measures are still on to make it more profitable for all.
The challenge is to reduce the gap between rural and urban educational and to bring the backward classes ahead. Corruption is yet other challenge giving higher repercussion to the system but the positive point is that there is huge potential in India to really transform the way that teaching and learning happens in schools across the country and soon be listed amongst the developed countries.
